7 March 2005 ‘I would just like to know if Dr Ford would like to go to Thamkrabok to do the detox for her nicotine addiction... I would be only too willing to support her through this.’ Extreme defence I would just like to respond to the ‘Extreme measures’ article in DDN in your 7 February issue. As a recovering addict myself and having done the Thamkrabok detox in May 2002, I would like to respond to Dr Chris Ford’s comments. Firstly Dr Ford mentioned ‘follow-up’: you can only provide good follow up as to match the person’s willingness to engage in this. As for a ‘few days in Thailand’, while detoxing at Thamkrabok: a day is very long, a night time even longer – and a week is very very long, especially while doing the medicine and vomiting. A month... well that seems for ever and a day at the time. As for getting down to 5ml: ‘they can probably do the last 5ml...’ – or probably not, as in most cases. Keyword probably – well Dr Ford, you may be right. As for a ‘nice option’: I would just like to say there is nothing nice about this detox. Heat, living conditions, mosquitoes, food, language barrier – oh and the withdrawal symptoms, sweats, pains, no sleep etc... I would just like to sum up – ‘It’s not down to 5ml and off for a nice few days in Thailand and back to no follow-up’. I believe that this is a viable option of detox that people in this country should look at. I can’t speak for other parts of the country, but in Dundee we seem to be loving addicts to death, catering for their addiction and not giving them enough options to find a way out of addiction. I say let’s back Mike Sarson and East-West Detox, and let addicts who are willing, and have the courage to change, make the choice for themselves. I would just like to say that I have a lot of respect for Vanessa Crawford who went out to Thamkrabok and experienced this detox for herself... and also that I am now employed as a drug support worker in Dundee and have supported people to and through this detox. I would just like to know if Dr Ford would like to go to Thamkrabok to do the detox for her nicotine addiction... I would be only too willing to support her through this.
